Access to clean water

Why Clean Water Matters

Water is essential for all living things — but not all water is safe to drink. Around the world, millions of people do not have reliable access to clean, safe drinking water. This is one of the most important health challenges humanity faces today.

The United Nations (UN) has recognised this by making clean water and sanitation one of its 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development (Goal 6). These goals aim to create a healthier, fairer world for everyone.

Sanitation

The systems and practices that keep environments clean and hygienic, including safe disposal of waste and access to clean toilet facilities.

Note

"Sanitation" doesn't just mean toilets — it includes handwashing facilities, sewage treatment, and keeping water supplies free from contamination.
