What is a Formula?
A formula is an equation that connects two or more variables. It describes a mathematical relationship that is always true.
You've already seen formulas in science and maths — for example, the area of a rectangle () or the formula for speed (). Formulas are powerful because once you know the rule, you can find any missing value.
The subject of a formula is the variable that appears by itself on one side of the equation. For example, in , the subject is .
Think of a formula like a recipe. The subject is the dish you're making, and the other variables are the ingredients. Sometimes you know what dish you want but need to work backwards to find how much of one ingredient to use!
