Policies checked on 6 October 2026. CUET and university examples refer to the 2026 admission cycle. Check the bulletin for your intended entry year before applying.
For families considering the IB in India, university recognition is only the first question. Which subjects should a student take? Will the Diploma satisfy a degree’s requirements? How should IB grades be entered when an application asks for percentages?
These questions deserve specific answers before subject choices become final.
The useful starting point is to distinguish recognition of the qualification, eligibility for a particular programme, and selection for a place. That distinction also makes an honest comparison with CBSE and ISC possible.
Is the IB Diploma Recognised in India?
Yes. The Association of Indian Universities, or AIU, lists IB qualifications in its advisory dated 25 July 2016 on equivalence to India’s 10+2 stage, subject to stated conditions. The National Testing Agency (NTA) explicitly lists the IB Diploma among qualifying examinations in its CUET UG 2026 Information Bulletin.
Read that recognition through three separate checks:
- Qualification: Is your exact award accepted at the required school leaving level?
- Programme eligibility: Do your subjects, levels and results satisfy the degree’s conditions?
- Selection: Have you completed the required tests, applications and admission process successfully?
Individual Diploma Programme course results need a separate check. Give the admissions office the exact name of your award.
Documentation also deserves current guidance. The University Grants Commission (UGC) introduced equivalence regulations in April 2025 that include provisions for qualifications from schools situated abroad. NTA’s 2026 bulletin separately mentions a UGC equivalence certificate for candidates completing Class XII or equivalent outside India, or through an unlisted board.
These provisions do not establish one identical certificate requirement for every IB student studying in India. Ask the university which document it requires for your qualification, where you studied, and admission category.
How CUET Works Alongside the IB Diploma
The Common University Entrance Test for undergraduates, or CUET UG, provides a separate entrance assessment for participating institutions. The IB Diploma remains your school qualification.
For 2026, NTA permits candidates to choose up to five CUET test papers, including languages and the General Aptitude Test, irrespective of their Class XII subjects. Its bulletin also states:
“Candidates may select the subjects based on the eligibility criteria for a programme of a desired university.”
The University of Delhi shows why that qualification matters. Its 2026 undergraduate bulletin requires applicants to take CUET in subjects they are studying or have passed in Class XII. If a school subject has no exact CUET counterpart, DU specifies a similar or closely related paper, requires at least 50% syllabus overlap, and reserves the final decision.
The practical implication is clear: permission to select a CUET paper does not establish eligibility for every degree that uses it.
For a concrete programme requirement, Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies’ 2026 admissions FAQ states that DU applicants to BMS and BBA(FIA) must pass Mathematics or Applied Mathematics in Class XII and take the relevant CUET mathematics component. IB students should confirm how their particular mathematics course satisfies that requirement.
Before registering, record the accepted CUET combination for each target programme. Ask specifically how your IB subjects correspond to those requirements, including Mathematics AA or AI and Higher or Standard Level. Obtain written clarification where the published wording is unclear.
For DU’s regular admission route, applicants must also register through its Common Seat Allocation System, or CSAS. Completing the CUET application alone does not complete the university application.
How IB Percentage Conversion Actually Works
Start with an identifiable document. The IB’s April 2012 conversion letter hosted by AIU, checked on 6 October 2026, publishes the following suggested conversion for individual subject grades.
| IB subject grade | Suggested Indian equivalent marks |
|---|---|
| 7 | 96 to 100 |
| 6 | 83 to 95 |
| 5 | 70 to 82 |
| 4 | 56 to 69 |
| 3 | 41 to 55 |
| 2 | 21 to 40 |
| 1 | 1 to 20 |
The issuer is the IB; AIU hosts the letter. Its wording permits schools to use the midpoint of a grade range for reporting equivalent marks.
These are suggested subject conversion ranges. The document does not establish a universal aggregate percentage, a university cutoff, or a rule for converting the overall Diploma total.
Ask your DP coordinator to arrange the appropriate percentage transcript for your Indian applications and confirm the university’s calculation requirements. Keep school predictions separate from final results. Use the official percentage document when requested, rather than a calculation from total Diploma points.
Before entering an aggregate, establish which subjects the university includes, whether it needs individual converted marks, and which document supports those figures. The goal is to submit the percentage the institution actually requests.
Prepare for CUET With a Separate Syllabus Check
IB students should make a deliberate preparation plan for their selected CUET papers.
The NTA’s 2026 FAQs state that testing is benchmarked to the NCERT syllabus. They specify 50 compulsory questions per paper and a standard duration of one hour. NTA publishes the individual subject syllabuses separately.
Use those documents to build your preparation:
- Compare every required topic with what you have studied in your DP course.
- Mark topics that need additional coverage or a different approach.
- Practise the relevant question format under timed conditions.
- Review mistakes for gaps in knowledge, interpretation and speed.
For preparation, assess both your subject knowledge and your coverage of the CUET syllabus. Familiar subject names do not establish identical content.
Plan this work alongside school deadlines. Ask your coordinator and subject teachers to help identify where CUET preparation overlaps with DP revision and where it requires additional time. That makes the workload visible before application season.
IB vs CBSE vs ISC: What Should Families Compare?
A useful comparison starts with the curriculum students will actually complete.
IB: The Diploma Programme core sits alongside six subject groups and includes Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay, and Creativity, Activity, Service. Consider whether the student wants this combination of subject study, independent research and wider activity.
CBSE: Its 2026 to 2027 Mathematics syllabus prescribes NCERT textbooks and includes internal assessment. Familiarity with those materials can make syllabus planning more straightforward for that subject. This is a practical inference about preparation; admission still depends on the published selection rules.
ISC: Its revised 2026 Class XII Mathematics syllabus combines a theory examination with assessed project work. Families should examine the relevant subject requirements and workload when comparing an ISC school with an IB or CBSE school.
Use these curriculum details to compare the work subject by subject. Then examine teaching quality and the support available at the actual school.
Our recommendation is to choose a route that satisfies likely degree requirements and leaves enough time for the student’s other priorities. If entrance preparation is central to the plan, compare syllabus overlap and the real timetable. If independent research and the DP core are major reasons for choosing IB, weigh that educational value alongside the additional commitments.
Include fees, subject availability, counselling and the student’s preferred ways of learning in the decision. The curriculum label cannot answer those questions for your family.
Does IB Recognition Mean University Credit?
Admission and degree credit require separate checks.
In its US recognition guide, Lanterna notes that “Policies vary widely between institutions”. That observation concerns overseas credit and placement arrangements. It does not establish what an Indian university will award.
For an Indian application, look for an explicit institutional policy before assuming that Higher Level subjects will earn exemptions, shorten a degree or reduce fees. Ask what any credit would count towards within the particular programme.
Also confirm the institution’s admission route. Record whether it requires CUET, another assessment or a separate published process. An answer about recognition should never be the only information in your university shortlist.
Build Your Application Plan Before DP2
Create a record for each serious university option, starting with the degree and intended entry year. Add the official admissions link and the date you checked it.
Then complete five tasks:
- Confirm the qualification. Record the exact IB award accepted and any equivalence document requested.
- Check subjects and levels. Match your DP choices to programme requirements and clarify ambiguous subject names.
- Record the selection route. List the required tests, CUET combination where applicable, and university registration steps.
- Arrange results documentation. Ask how predicted grades, final results and percentage transcripts should be submitted, and by which deadlines.
- Review the workload. Put school assessments, entrance preparation and application dates into one calendar.
For teachers and counsellors, reviewing this record before subject choices are final can reveal questions that deserve an admissions office’s answer. Keep that written response with the relevant application documents.
For students already taking the Diploma, use the plan to organise preparation. Explore Koncepts for DP students for lessons and practice with markschemes, while using the official CUET syllabus to identify any additional entrance preparation.
