The Ansoff Matrix
Every business that wants to grow faces the same fundamental choice: push harder in familiar territory, or move into something new. The answer shapes how much risk the business takes on, how much capital it needs, and how long it might wait before seeing returns.
The Ansoff Matrix, developed by strategist Igor Ansoff, organises these choices into a clear 2x2 framework. It plots two variables against each other: whether the product is existing or new, and whether the market is existing or new. The four cells that result each represent a distinct growth strategy, each with its own risk profile.
A strategic planning tool that maps four possible growth strategies according to whether the product and the market involved are existing or new to the business.
The matrix does not tell a business which strategy to pick. It forces decision-makers to be explicit about what they are actually doing and what risk they are accepting in doing it. That clarity is its value.
