What a Decision Tree Does
Businesses rarely face choices with certain outcomes. A product launch might succeed or fail. An investment might pay off or not. The instinct is to pick the option that feels best, but feeling is not analysis. A decision tree replaces that instinct with a structured, visual method that maps every option, every possible outcome, and every probability onto a single diagram.
A decision tree is a visual decision-making tool that represents possible choices, the chance events that follow each choice, and the financial outcomes of each path, allowing a business to compare options systematically.
The value of the tool is not just in the final answer it produces. Drawing a decision tree forces a management team to state their assumptions explicitly: what options exist, how likely each outcome is, and what each outcome is worth. That process of making assumptions visible is itself useful, even before any numbers are calculated.
