What Paper 2 Tests
Paper 2 has two separate sections, listening and reading, and is worth 65 marks in total: 25 for listening and 40 for reading. This subtopic covers the listening section. Where Paper 1 asks you to read, and the written tasks ask you to produce, Paper 2 asks you to receive spoken English in real time and demonstrate that you understood it at several levels simultaneously.
The core question the paper asks is not "did you hear the words?" but "did you understand the message?" Those are different things. A student who catches every syllable but cannot identify the speaker's attitude, or who misses what is implied rather than stated, will not score well. The paper is designed to reward exactly the skills that make language useful outside an exam room: following a podcast, picking up on tone in an interview, or catching the point of a news report.
Both SL and HL students sit Paper 2. The difference is time: SL has 45 minutes and HL has 1 hour. Both papers carry 25 marks and use the same style of comprehension tasks.
