What Makes Listening Different

Reading and listening test the same language, but the conditions are completely different. A reader can pause, re-read, and look back. A listener cannot. In Paper 2, each audio plays exactly twice, and once it has passed, it has passed. That asymmetry is why listening demands its own set of skills, separate from anything you practise when reading a text.

The core challenge is not vocabulary size or grammar knowledge. It is managing attention under time pressure. Students who struggle on Paper 2 almost never fail because they do not know enough English. They fail because they lose track of where they are, panic over one missed word, or write down answers in a form the question did not ask for.

Knowing the pitfalls and having a clear plan before the audio starts are the two things that make the difference.
